SME upgrading necessary in economic revival

The upgrading of SMEs is vital if their fortunes are to improve, says Eveline Ndlovu, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises Development.

Ndlovu said this at a one day workshop in the city for emerging business entrepreneurs which was organised by Zimbabwe National Association for Small to Medium Enterprises (ZNASME), in collaboration with the Small Enterprise Development Corporation (SEDCO).

Eveline Ndlovu said it was vital that the welfare of small businesses be looked into since SMEs are a strategic cog in the revival of the economy. They should get maximum support, she stressed.

Since the turn of the century, the Zimbabwean economy's fortunes have been wanning. Themba Ncube the Chairperson of the ZNASME reiterated that SMEs need to be upgraded in terms of education and funding in the business field.

We hope (them) to acquire knowledge to uplift their projects and marketing skills. SMEs are the economic engines of the nation's development and they possess the power and potential to turn around the economic situation of our country and a gloomy socio-political outlook. SMEs, which now employ the vast number of Zimbabwe's working class could indeed bring about much needed fortunes.
