SUMMER'S DEADLY DISEASE

Summer time in Zimbabwe is charecterised by very hot weather and reasonable amounts of rainfall. These hot and humid conditions are most favorable for the spread of malaria, a very deadly disease.

Malaria is a tropical disease caused by parasites carried by mosquitoes and injected into the bloodstream through the mosquito's bite. About 3 million people each year worldwide are contract malaria and it is the greatest medical hazard facing travelers visiting the tropics.

Once in the blood stream the bloodstream the parasites travel to the liver where they reproduce. Malaria is charecterised by a particular recurring fever; this start with chills, after which temperature soars, then the patient is drenched with sweat as the body tries to cool down.

Severe cases may develop kidney failure or coma. Malaria can be fatal but if treated early the disease can be controlled. Malaria is endemic in most parts of Southern Africa including Zimbabwe. If you get any of the stated symptoms you should visit the nearest health institution as soon as possible because any delay may be fatal.
